About Great Big Sea
Great Big Sea
Saturday, July 6, 7:30
Great Big Sea is a Celtic folk-rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, with its roots in St. John's rowdy pubs. They are best known for performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs including sea shanties, which draw from the island's 500-year-old Irish, Scottish, and French heritage. Judging from their 2009 appearance at Big Top Chautauqua (right after their front man Alan Doyle appeared in Russell Crowe's movie Robin Hood as a travelling minstrel and one of the merry men) we know this will be a highly energetic and extremely fun night to be at the tent.

Big Top is throwing a year-end, jam-grass party before the tent gets packed away for the winter. All of the seats will be out of the tent. But we're keeping the stage up and the sound & lights lit for one last night. And on that stage, we're bringing two of the hottest young bands on the festival circuit today. Elephant Revival has played at the Big Top three times, becoming a crowd favorite. The five etheric souls in Elephant Revival hail from Nederland, Colorado. They play their own unique brand of gypsy/rock/Celtic/Alt-country/folk. Greensky Bluegrass is perhaps the best-named band in bluegrass! Combining traditional bluegrass with rock n roll and indie Americanna, the 5-piece band hails from Kalamazoo, Michigan. You'll either need to bring your feet for standing or lawn chairs for sitting for this show. Sounds like a dancin' good way to close out the summer.

Full of humor, music and surprises, Walkin' Shoes brings Kevin Kling (one of MN's most significant storytellers) and Dan Chouinard (accordianist, pianist and writer) together for tales of the roads they've traveled. Kevin and Dan kindly rely on the "strangeness of others" to inspire stories and songs. Kevin is perhaps best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." His autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota, and eating things before knowing what they are. Kevin has a way of describing encounters with surprise and humor; together with Dan they will feature tales from the road on the American journey.

In 2013, Ladysmith Black Mambazo celebrates over fifty years of joyous and uplifting music that marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of gospel music. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated Black Mambazo's rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his Graceland album (remember "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes?") - a landmark 1986 recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. A year later, Simon produced Black Mambazo's first U.S. release, Shaka Zulu, which won a Grammy Award in 1988. Since then, the group has been awarded two more Grammy Awards and has been nominated a total of fifteen times including a nomination for their most recent CD release, Songs From A Zulu Farm.

Leo's musical style is so intricate that the uninitiated listener will swear that they are hearing more than one guitarist and several instruments playing. But in fact it is one man and one guitar, and 10 lightning-propelled fingers. Kottke has graced the Big Top stage seven times since 1995. Saturday, September 7, 7:30 PM
Every year on the Saturday after Labor Day, we celebrate the year with our "Old Last Night" variety night. Our own Blue Canvas Orchestra, under the Old Last Night leadership of our renowned fiddler Bruce Bowers, kicks the evening off with their own brand of high-energy, bluegrass/folk-inspired, crowd-pleasing music. Michael Perry, humorist and host of Tent Show Radio, adds his Wisconsin-grown wit and humor to the night. And this year, we welcome bluegrass sensation Della Mae to close out the evening. The five female musicians of Della Mae form a powerful collective chemistry with vocal, instrumental, and songwriting talent to spare, the Boston-based combo mines time-honored elements to create music that's unmistakably fresh and contemporary - and is a fun and fitting official close to the 2013 Big Top Season (although this year you'll notice we're continuing on in a few post-season special events.)

About The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys
Sunday, July 14, 7:30 PM
It's time for the "Endless Summer" to hit Bayfield! Of course you know these hit songs: "Surfin' USA," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "Help Me Rhonda," "California Girls," and "Good Vibrations." Perhaps these songs conjure your best summer memories. Come re-live those times with Mike Love and the Beach Boys at the Big Top! You can define most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they've had and how many millions of albums they've sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you're assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.

About The BoDeans
The BoDeans
Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 7:30 PM
"I've always thought of the BoDeans as an American band," says Kurt Neumann, the founder, primary writer and frontman of the Milwaukee-based group. 'Roots rock' was a label I fought, but if by 'roots' you meant blues, rock, country & soul all slammed together into one sound, then yes-that is the sound of American-made music." Thanks to Neumann's renewed passion and determination, the BoDeans are still going strong a quarter century after their debut album led them to win a Rolling Stone readers' poll as "Best New American Band," and nearly 20 years after their "Closer to Free" became a massive hit and the theme song of the sitcom Party of Five. Big Top is pleased to welcome The BoDeans back for their third time on our stage.
