Cloud Cult with David Mayfield Parade and That 1 Guy
Friday, August 31
Tickets: All seats reserved: $38*
Cloud Cult, from Minneapolis, is so environmentally conscious that it once asked fans for CD jewel cases to be cleaned and reused. But in its music the band is less "Al Gore" than "William Blake," singing kaleidoscopic invocations of the life force in a bright indie psychedelia. While the band plays, two visual artists create original paintings to the beat. If you don't get it, you might be too square for these hipsters! David Mayfield is the "other" voice, lead guitarist, and contributing songwriter for folk rock favorites Cadillac Sky- and he is also the brother to noted songstress Jessica Lea Mayfield. But it was while on the road with Jessica that Avett Brothers, Scott and Seth took notice of Mayfield's musicianship and the three quickly developed a friendship, leading them to invite David to sit in with them dozens of times including their 2010 Bonnaroo & Merlefest sets. Mayfield's music channels the unique forms of American music with sincerity and celebration from the howl of early rock-n-roll, to the low lonesome twang of folk and country with a voice that is all at once heartbreaking and inherently hopeful. That 1 Guy is a one-man-band on crazy hand-made instruments including the 7 foot magic pipe made of PVC plumbing parts. He blew us away last year and we had to bring him back. This will be an extremely groovy night - pack your peace, love and understanding and prepare to hug a tree!
*We expect this to be a standing and dancing audience, choose your seating accordingly.

After nearly 20 albums (including a Live from the Big Top album) and more than three decades of performing, this co-founder of the influential indie roots label Red House Records and former musical director for Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion radio program, Iowa singer-songwriter Greg Brown has amassed a rock-solid legion of fans. Brown’s songs are as Midwestern as they come: slow, straight forward, and bluesy, they deal with ordinary yet highly individual people as they navigate life’s twists and turns. Like a jagged stone worked by ocean waves, Brown's signature rough hewn-yet-velvet-smooth baritone is in fine form on his latest release Freak Flag.

Alligator Records recording artist JJ Grey was nominated this year for the B.B. King International Blues Artist of the Year award, losing out to Greg Allman, He grew up in the swamplands of northern Florida which gave him his down home roots-rock-blues-soul sound and his front porch realism. Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers, and his songs oftentimes use the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the southern culture he grew up in as a metaphor for universal truths. His songwriting is influenced by some of the great musical storytellers: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Dr. John, Sly & The Family Stone, Van Morrison… and his performing conjures the sexually charged blues of Howlin' Wolf, the country soul of George Jones and the hard funk of James Brown, as well as local personalities like street preachers and old time radio DJs. The band delivers his material with brilliant musicianship, resulting in music that is thought provoking rhythmically dynamic and texturally mesmerizing. From gritty funk to juke joint romps to contemplative country sound, JJ Grey and Mofro occupy a distinctive space in the music world.

His light southern tenor drawl, warmly wrapped in country/bluegrass/folk arrangements, can gently ascend to the heavens a la Roy Orbison, dish some sly, wry dirt or knock a listener's heart senseless with one defly-turned phrase. Jesse had to cancel his 2011 Big Top debut due to medical issues - we're lucky that he's fully mended and ready to sing for us. Rad Lorkovic is the extra-terrestrial from Planet Piano - a master on piano, accordion and voice. Leahy is the Canadian powerhouse of eight musical brothers and sisters who mystify audiences when ever they play. The band is a whirlwind triple-threat of fiddle-driven music, dance, and vocals augmented by keyboards and percussion. Their music combines the influence of their Irish and Scottish roots with their inherent desire to widely travel the musical map. They have been awarded several Juno Awards (Canada's Grammys) and have toured with fellow Canadian Shania Twain. Leahy will always feel the power of its musical roots, but they continue to be driven to forge new paths with their category-defying brand of music; a sound and style known to many fans as simply "Leahy." Big Top audiences have been begging for a return since they brought down the tent (luckily not literally) in 2005, although Donnell Leahy has been back since then in concert with his wife Natalie MacMaster.

About Old Last Night with BCO, Elephant Revival, Micha
Old Last Night with Blue Canvas Orchestra, Michael Perry and the Long Beds and Elephant Revival
Saturday, September 8
Tickets: $32/$28/$22
Old Last Night is the grand finale of the summer season - it's our variety show led by our own house band Blue Canvas Orchestra. On Old Last Night, you should plan on staying out just a little later than usual. After the concert, we light a big bon fire in the parking lot and the music usually continues until the wee hours. Wisconsin Native Michael Perry, (humorist, author and host of Tent Show Radio) has been hosting Old Last Night for the last few seasons. This year, he's bringing along his own band The Long Beds with their homespun country folk tunes that feel like "stories that could be fodder for a sunrise coffee klatch in a small-town diner." Elephant Revival returns for their 3rd visit to the Big Top stage. In 2010 they opened for The Avett Brothers, and last year shared the stage with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. ER has become one of our favorite groups performing a specialized and inviting music they call transcendental folk, incorporating elements of Scottish/Celtic fiddle tunes, original folk pieces, traditional ballads, bluegrass, psychedelic country, indie rock, reggae, 40s/50s jazz standards and an occasional hip-hop beat. All members of the band are multi-instrumentalists and contribute vocals and to songwriting. Come help us ring out the old Big Top year - you'll be glad you did!

About Riders in the Sky
For more than thirty years Riders In The Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing the genre. And while remaining true to the integrity of Western music, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding the genre with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life "The Cowboy Way!"
Riders In The Sky are exceptional not just in the sense that their music is of superlative standards (they are the ONLY exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy, and Riders have won two), but by the fact that their accomplishments are an exception to the rule as well.

His dozen albums of traditional music, rock and roll, and spoken word present a contemporary view of American Indian life that is unequaled. A leading proponent of world music, Robert has merged his indigenous American sound with those of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies categorization. About Trampled by Turtles
Duluth, MN's Trampled by Turtles released their latest studio record, Palomino (Banjodad/Thirty Tigers), on April 10, 2010. Their blend of dazzling speedgrass coupled with thoughtful, Townes Van Zant-esque ballads launched them from hometown phenomenon to national status. With a sound that's a bracing hybrid of classic American songwriting, bluegrass and folk, this is forceful acoustic music from the land of ice and snow - of dark winters, isolation and numbing cold - delivered at breakneck pace with the fervor of religion.

The Travelin' McCoury s are the latest incarnation of the most awarded band in the history of bluegrass - The Del McCoury Band. Keller Williams is known as one of the most innovative solo singer/songwriters of this generation. What happens when the two join forces? The live stage may never be the same. Brought together by equal parts mutual admiration and the desire to change the musical landscape while staying true to their roots, The Travelin' McCourys and Keller Williams are a perfect - albeit unexpected - fit. The two have a lot in common after all: their high energy, ever-evolving live shows, their individual playing prowess and their strong and unique song writing skills. For The Travelin' McCoury's Featuring Keller Williams, fans will see Keller playing his music with one of the best live bands on the touring circuit. McCoury fans, used to seeing the boys tour with Del in the lead, will now get to see them playing their songs with Keller on guitar. It's a perfect marriage of instrumental virtuosos, memorable songwriting, infectious musical camaraderie, and undeniable energy. And with both acts known to bring epic and spontaneous live collaborations to theaters and festivals across America - The Travelin' McCoury's Featuring Keller Williams will take this collaborative spirit one step further, promising to bring something fresh and unexpected to the live stage

His original songs still resonate from the tent at the hands of the BCO including "Autumn Fancy," "Riding the Wind," "Keeper of the Light," "Over to Old LaPointe," & "Ballyhoo." Warren has released a memoir entitled "Ballyhoo! Back Stage Big Top" and is launching his latest big musical this summer based on his love of baseball called "Play Ball!"
